Make your own gilded name boards: An elegant alternative to transom signage
Wooden boat owners shoulder the joys and burdens of doing much of our own work. For many, it is part of the joy of stewardship, and often, a financial necessity. Keeping our boats in good shape, functionally and cosmetically, affords confidence in their sea-worthiness and pride in their appearance. Elegant signage for a boat’s name and homeport won’t make her more sea-kindly, but it announces our pride and makes her more memorable for those who encounter her. Transom signage is the solution for most, topsides for others, but we lose the signage whenever these need refinishing. Name boards can help solve this problem, and are a great winter project to keep our hearts and minds focussed on our coming adventures afloat. There is nothing so elegant as gold on mahogany, glinting in the sun, and removable name boards simplify maintenance, for the boat and the name boards. Letter carving is a traditional maritime skill, and gold leaf gilding is a long-lasting means to enhance the beauty of hand carved letters and decorations. Both are now considered esoteric and somewhat outside the spectrum of common skills among boat maintainers. They needn’t be. This workshop will take attendees through the tools, materials and techniques to design, plan, carve, finish, gild, and install name boards for their vessels.

Solving Problems in Boatbuilding: a Painless Approach
Building a boat is a very long train of problem-solving events, and it can seem endless and overwhelming. But there is a series of steps we can take to condition our minds to approach each problem rationally, efficiently, and painlessly. This presentation will outline the process, with illustrations from my fifteen years of building boats.

When Good Fuels Go Bad
In this seminar you will learn what causes fuel to breakdown inside your fuel tank and how to prevent it.  There will be discussions on current methods of fuel care such as fuel additives, on board filtration and fuel polishing.

We will discuss the first onboard preventative device available which stabilizes fuel without using additives, the H2Out Air Vent Dryer.

Azorean Whaleboats

The American Connection: The adoption of the American whaleboat and it’s evolution to the Azorean whaleboat used for coastal whaling in the mid-Atlantic Azore Islands.

For over 160 years, from 1765-1927, the Portuguese of the Azore Islands whaled with American whalers from New England. They learned the craft and adapted the equipment. For over 120 years, 1865-1986, the Azoreans pursued the whale in their own coastal waters, using their unique boats evolved from the American design. This is also the story of the revival and preservation of the Azorean whaleboat and its part in the cultural fabric of the islands.

WoodenBoat Thieves in Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Teddy Roosevelt was a woodenboat builder – not by choice but by necessity. In 1886, Theodore Roosevelt had his boat tied to a tree behind his ranch on the Little Missouri River which he used to cross the river when the water was high and check on his cattle on the other side. One morning during the high water of spring thaw, it went missing… probably the result of the raging river and wild current - or possibly the work of some cattle rustlers and horse thieves that lived upriver and needed to flea the Dakota territory before they were hanged??

Come find out how Roosevelt dealt with this situation by building a wooden boat in two days and giving chase to the bandits. Quite a story – quite a man.
